Initial Robot concepts
Here are a bunch of doodled/sketched initial robot ideas. The robots theme around Shaolin, Ninja and Samurai aspects, some even mix traits of each. Some also play with the idea of 'cyber flowers' into their design. I tried incorporated cloth and clothing onto the robots, different shapes, longer arms and face coverings. I want the robot to be budding - a novice to the martial art of his choosing. I want him simplistic, cartoony but recognisable, which is why, although i like some of these concepts, i haven't settled with one.

Cyber flowers
Cyber flowers are robotic creations which 'behave' like animals. Flowers made from inorganic matter, they sense and respond to people around them in a life like way. They're fluid and dynamic and adapt and change to the presences around them.
I wanted to incorporate this into part of my robots design. I felt they would be suitable, because i want a 'Zen' and 'Shaolin' feel. Flowers are like that, but these are robotic and would compliment the robot.
Fighting Styles
Another contender of martial arts is that of the Samurai way.
Genres of Robots
Cyber punk
This genre of robotics is one which focuses on strong dystopia ideals. The loss of morality, humanity and freedom in succumbing to that of technology. Examples of media in this genre include Blade Runner and Dark city.
Steampunk
A genre of robotic which is most commonly set in anachronistic Victorian settings. It experiments with technology happening sooner than it should have. It generally correlates to science fiction and fantasy themes. Steampunk is more about technology helping us than hindering us.
Sci Fi
Of all he genres, Sci fi fantasy is what i will be aiming for. I know my weaknesses when it comes to drawing and modelling - and that is hard surface, mechanical designs. I'm more of an organic person, stubborn geometry doesn't suit me well.

Sci Fi
Robots of the sci fi genre usually breach into space territory. Often white and chrome plated, they are rather alien and obscure. These robots often have the most distinguished shapes and sizes, differing greatly.

Robots across Media
Robots have been a common reincarnation across all forms of media. There has always been some form of fascination with the mechanical menaces or servants - depending on the portrayal. Robots can be found in many sci fi films, games and animations. From the likes of the malicious Metal Sonic to that of the depressed robot, Marvin, of A Hitch Hiker's guide to the galaxy, robots have been utilised and portrayed as characters in many ways.
Common colours associated with robots include that of chromatic, silver colours and rusty hues. Some even incorporate blue into their design - although in the case of Mega Man above, this is to align with his heroic side, since he is a protagonist, where as Metal Sonic, a villain robot, is to reflect his doppelgänger nature to Sonic, who is blue.
Perhaps our fascination with robots is akin to our fascination with immortality. Robots are more or less permanent, immortal, they re not organic - and more or less last forever, except for the rusting part. Robots can be fashioned into many things - but most depictions include a humanoid form.
Many of the robots depicted above, sourced from several different genres and platforms, are all stylised in certain ways. Villainous robots are sharp, tall and imposing where as the friendlier robots are flatter, rounder and appear the most human.
The kind of robot i'd like to depict for this martial arts project is that of a simplified, stylised kind of cartoony robot like the likes of Wally or Clank from Ratchet and Clank.

M.A.R - Brief
|
Brief
A
Video-Game company is planning to launch new game called “MAR: Martial Arts Robots”.
As members of the company’s creative
team your task is to create the concept art of a robot-fighter and model it
precisely. You also have to texture it and animate it in the selected Martial
Art style. The whole outcome must be photo-realistic. Pay extra
attention on the topology of the 3d character.
Be
creative: experiment with different landscapes or character designs
(keywords: industrial revolution, steam punk, cyber punk, high tech, sci fi ,
robotics, 3d printer).
Camera
direction is very important too, for your short film.
You
need to sunmit:
a) A
(30-60 sec) video with the robot performing M.A. movements (individual
project). Sound is compulsory.
b) A poster of your character in its
environment.
Poster
Dimensions: A3
Image
Resolution: 300 dpi
Video
Dimensions: 1280 x 720 pixels

For this 3D project , we are to create a MAR - Martial arts Robot for a 'video game' company - as part of their game. The robot must be photo realistic and be based off a particular style of fighting - such as kungfu for example.
From this i am to begin my research into various styles of robots and fighting styles for inspiration.
